The Bookmaker's Margin: How to Calculate What You're Paying

ยท5 min read

Every price includes a fee that is never itemised. Here is how to work it out in ten seconds.

Every price you have ever taken included a fee, and it is not itemised. The bookmaker's margin โ€” the overround, the vig, the juice โ€” is the cost of participating in a market, and it is the first thing any edge has to clear. Most bettors have never calculated it on a market they bet into.

Calculating it

Convert every outcome to implied probability (100 รท decimal odds) and add them together. The amount over 100% is the margin.

A match priced 2.20 / 3.40 / 3.50 gives 45.5% + 29.4% + 28.6% = 103.5%. The margin is 3.5%. Bet every outcome proportionally and you would lose about 3.4% of your total stake with certainty โ€” that is the bookmaker's structural edge.

For a two-outcome market the same method applies. Over/under at 1.90 and 1.95 gives 52.6% + 51.3% = 103.9%, a margin of 3.9%.

Why it varies so much

  • Liquidity. Premier League match odds might carry 2% to 4%. A third-tier match in a smaller league can carry 8% or more, because the bookmaker is less confident in its own price and fewer sharp bettors are policing it.
  • Market type. Main markets are tight. Player props, correct score and first-goalscorer routinely run 10% to 20%, and correct score can exceed 25%.
  • Bookmaker model. Some operators run low margins and restrict winning accounts. Others run wide margins and accept all comers. Both are viable businesses; only one is useful to you.
  • Time to kick-off. Margins typically tighten as a match approaches and more money arrives to sharpen the price.

What it means for your betting

If you bet a market with a 20% margin, your analysis must be better than the bookmaker's by more than 20% before you make a penny. In practice that is not achievable, which is why correct-score and goalscorer markets are entertainment rather than investment, whatever their appeal.

The corollary is that market selection matters more than match selection. A mediocre edge in a 2% market is profitable; an excellent edge in a 15% market usually is not. Most of the improvement available to an average bettor comes from moving to lower-margin markets, not from analysing harder.

Reducing what you pay

  1. 1.Hold accounts across several bookmakers and always take the best price. Line shopping alone can recover most of a typical margin.
  2. 2.Use exchanges where they are available to you. Commission on winnings is usually cheaper than the equivalent overround, particularly on liquid markets.
  3. 3.Concentrate on main markets โ€” match odds, goal totals, Asian handicaps โ€” where the margins are structurally lowest.
  4. 4.Check the margin before you bet, every time. It takes ten seconds and it will stop you betting into markets that were never winnable.

The margin does not make betting unbeatable. It sets the bar, and knowing exactly how high the bar is in the market in front of you is the difference between a considered bet and a hopeful one.
